Make an impact on society by using Open Data (and your brain) on air quality, city traffic flow and road accidents

Join us at Betacowork on December the 28th and 29th to compete in this end-of-year Open Data Hackathon.

We welcome designers, developers, data scientists, visualisation experts, academics, copy writers, poets and anyone into Open Data, code, pixels and prose.

We look forward to collaborate on applications based on Open Data sources (road safety), but also to create some open data sets ourselves with sensors (air quality and traffic patterns). The subjects for this hackathon are centred around mobility, smart cities and air quality. Sounds like something you’d be interested in? Great. You can additionally join us on Wednesday evening for a preparatory meeting (or conference call) to prepare the subjects. The organisers will provide a backend data platform and ‘open hardware’ (Arduino, Raspberry Pi, sensors and camera’s) to sharpen your skills. We also foresee a hands-on ‘how to solder’ session in which you learn to connect sensors (and to repair those broken electronics at home).

You will meet like-minded people. Engaged citizens who love solving problems, not only for themselves, but for society. People who love to make an impact, even when there is no apparent short term reward at stake (oh, but in our case there is..). Challenge yourself by challenging others and work your Open Data magic. We are expecting you in Betacowork!

You might just accidentally invent a solution for the vast mobility issues or ongoing air quality concerns. Now, wouldn’t THAT be the very best way to say goodbye to 2017? Let’s hope karma-points get carried over to the next year.

In a nutshell
Why?
To learn more about Open Data and contribute on how it can help society progress. (+ the great prize you can win of course)

What?
In two days, we will disover the possibilities of Open Data with Sensors and how it can have a positive impact on society. We center our hackathon around mobility, smart cities and air quality.

When?
December 28th and 29th, (with a preparatory Google hangout on Wednesday evening 6pm for those who want to prepare )

With the support of Impulse.brussels & Nexttech.brussels

Who?

The session will be moderated by Toon Vanagt and experts such as Kasper Van Lombeek from Rockestate, Dries Van Ransbeeck from Open Knowledge, Sagacify, Zensor (more exiting coaches will be added soon).

Only 35 participants can enter, so hurry up!

Prizes for the winning teams?

  • 5 X Win 2 months of half-time co-working space at Betacowork.com (€-value: 340 ex VAT)
  • 5 X Win an Arduino with sensors to measure air quality
  • 5 X Win a Raspberry Pi with 8MP camera to measure traffic
